Who is Caps For Kids?

Caps For Kids is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing autographed hats to children with cancer who have lost their hair as a result of various forms of treatment.

How did the organization get started?

Caps For Kids was founded in 1993 Stephen Heinrich, MS, MD. Dr. Heinrich was treating a young man with cancer. Lee was an avid Auburn University fan, and Dr. Heinrich gave him a hat autographed by Auburn University football coach Terry Bowden and his father, Florida State University football coach, Bobby Bowden. When Dr. Heinrich realized how happy a simple hat could make someone suffering from a life-threatening disease, he organized Caps For Kids to improve the spirits of young cancer patients nationwide.

How does Caps For Kids work?

Caps For Kids ships autographed hats to each participating hospital center. At each hospital, the Caps for Kids caps are first introduced to patients and staff, and then patients are given the opportunity to choose a hat from the selection. If the child would like a different hat, the request is circulated among the Caps For Kids volunteers located around the country and every effort is made to secure the perfect hat.

Where is Caps For Kids located?

Caps for Kids was founded and is based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Affiliate chapters exist at more than 100 hospitals in the United States and Canada.
